ooooo!
memoirs of a geisha is an excellent choice! i have yet to see the movie though.
allow me to reccomend interpreter of maladies by jhumpa lahiri for number 10. it's a book of short stories that "expertly captures the out-of-context lives of immigrants, expatriates, and first-generation americans" to quote the wall street journal. :P
there's also the screwtape letters which is a collection of letters from the demon screwtape to his nephew, a novice tempter. it is highly amusing as well as though-provoking if you read it in the right frame of mind.
i should make a list for myself too. that's a good idea.
